How To Make Your Search

The first thing to remember is that, not all search engines work the same. To learn the most about how to search with each search engine (Yahoo!, Alta Vista, etc.), look for their HELP link and study it carefully. Other than that, here are a few suggestions:

  • Search using a word that best describes the information you are looking for. If you are looking for information on video recorders then enter those two words into the search box. If you just enter video you will bring up information on everything that has to do with video, including video monitors, video games, video technology, etc. If you enter only recorders you will bring up everything having to do with recorders including the musical instrument.
  • The results of your search will appear as a list of topics with a very brief explanation for each item in the list. Click on the title of the item that appears to provide the information you are looking for. If it turns out that that link didn't provide what you wanted, use the BACK button at the top of your browser to return to the search engine's list of topics.
  • Use the scroll bar at the right-hand side of your screen to scroll down the list of topics. If there are numerous results displayed by your search you will find, at the bottom of the page, a link (text or graphic) leading to the next batch of items found by your search. When you click on that link you will see a new screen filled with possible topics you can check out.
  • Remember to use your Back button as much as necessary to surf in and out of the pages you locate during your search.
  • Also, if you are doing any type of research where you will be returning later to use the information you find today, use your Favorites tool in the menu bar. When you click on "Add to Favorites" you also have the option of creating a New Folder into which you can place your related links. Just click on the button and follow the prompts to give the new folder a name - any name you choose will work.
